![]() ![]() With this in mind there’s a lot to be said for doing at least your first draft in a word processor. Unless you plan to nail the perfect manuscript first time around, you’re probably going to have at least one round of editing from a second party. You get a much better sense of where you are in the book. There’s always a running total of chapter and overall word counts to hand. If you tend to lose the bigger picture when you’re writing – like discovering you’ve just hammered out a chapter of 10K words when all the others are half the length – this is a handy feature. If you don’t need that, discard!Ī more practical advantage is the overview of chapter structure you’re getting as you construct the book in Vellum. This can give some writers a visual and motivational kick. ![]() No longer does your manuscript look the same as some intern’s crappy MS Word document. You can choose a book style (never fear, it can always be changed later!) and actually see that pretty paperback (or ebook) chapter heading taking shape in the preview pane as you write the first paragraph.
